In August, Todd Long organized the first of several "Square Deal" Town hall meetings for the citizens of central Florida. The "Square Deal" is a voice against special interests that came from President Theodore Roosevelt's policy that "every citizen is entitled to a square deal, no more, no less." The event was held at the Maitland Civic Center and featured Pete Sepp, Press Secretary from the National Taxpayer’s Union; Bud Hedinger, radio celebrity from 540am WFLA; and “Tribute”. The colors were presented by the United States Marine Corps and refreshments were served by the Boy Scouts of America.
The theme of the event was the national debt. Todd passionately spoke about the looming crisis. "It is time we address the disaster career politicians are handing our children by borrowing money from the Chinese and Japanese to pay for their pet projects which they hide in emergency spending bills to avoid public scrutiny." Peter Sepp call the practice "unconscionable" and Bud Hedinger called on citizens to "be informed on these issues before you go to the polls."
More "Square Deal" town hall meetings are planned in 2007.
